About Costerfield
Costerfield is a small former mining locality in north-central Victoria, situated approximately 10 km north-east of Heathcote and 126 km north of Melbourne. At the 2016 census the population was just 75 people, reflecting its quiet rural character. The locality takes its name from a combination of two early European settler surnames and sits in gently undulating country near the Heathcote Fault Zone.
Costerfield has a rich gold mining history dating to the 1850s and continues to host active mining operations through the Augusta-Brunswick underground gold project. The surrounding landscape features dry sclerophyll bushland, farming properties, and the natural beauty of the Heathcote region. Residents are drawn to its peaceful rural lifestyle, with the historic town of Heathcote — known for its wineries and Shiraz wines — providing essential services and community life just a short drive away.
Costerfield falls under postcode 3523 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Euroa (Northern Victoria) electorate.
