About Cowirra
Cowirra is a small historic locality in the Murraylands region of South Australia, situated on the eastern (left) bank of the Murray River, directly opposite the town of Mannum. Administered by the Mid Murray Council, the locality covers approximately 21.7 square kilometres and recorded a population of 155 residents in the 2021 Census. The township was first laid out in 1901, and the area includes the eastern landing points of the Mannum vehicle ferries, making it an important river crossing point for the region.
Cowirra's landscape is shaped by the Murray River, with low-lying river flats used for irrigated farming — including sheep, grain, beef cattle, and potatoes — rising to higher ground to the east. The locality includes the area known as Mannum East, and the ferry connection to Mannum provides residents with ready access to that town's shops, services, and community facilities, approximately 60 kilometres north-east of Murray Bridge. The Murray River lifestyle, with opportunities for boating, fishing, and nature walks along the river corridor, defines daily life in Cowirra.
Cowirra falls under postcode 5238 and is governed by Mid Murray Council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Hammond electorate.
