About Culgoa
Culgoa is a small rural township in the Mallee region of north-western Victoria, situated on the Calder Highway approximately 319 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and governed by Buloke Shire Council. The township sits at the crossing of Tyrrell Creek, roughly midway between Wycheproof and Sea Lake, in an area dominated by broadacre farming of wheat, barley, and legume crops. At the 2021 Census, Culgoa recorded a population of 86, set across a notably large locality of almost 162 square kilometres of flat, open agricultural land.
Culgoa has a modest but resilient community with a post office history dating back to 1893, when it was first named Kaneira before being renamed in 1920. Local sporting facilities including golf at the Culgoa Golf Club on the Calder Highway, as well as tennis, lawn bowls, netball, and Australian Rules football, provide the social fabric for this small farming community. The town of Wycheproof, about 20 kilometres to the south, offers the nearest shops, schools, and health services, while the landscape itself reflects the wide, flat grandeur of Victoria's Mallee wheat belt.
Culgoa falls under postcode 3530 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mildura (Northern Victoria) electorate.
