About Cumnock
Cumnock is a small country town in the Cabonne Shire Council area of New South Wales, located approximately 318 kilometres west-north-west of Sydney and 59 kilometres north-west of Orange on the Central Western Tablelands. With a population of 491 and an elevation of around 514 metres, the town enjoys a cool-to-temperate climate characteristic of the tablelands. The locality covers a large area of over 407 square kilometres of surrounding grazing and cropping farmland.
The town takes its name from the Scottish town of Cumnock in Ayrshire, honouring the heritage of its early European settlers. Cumnock is a tight-knit rural community where the local school, hall, and sporting facilities form the heart of everyday life. Orange, approximately 59 kilometres to the south-east, provides the nearest comprehensive range of retail, healthcare, and education services. The now-closed Molong–Dubbo cross-country railway once served the town, reflecting its earlier role in the region's pastoral economy. Today, Cumnock offers a genuine slice of agricultural New South Wales at an accessible distance from the Central West's regional centres.
Cumnock falls under postcode 2867 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Orange electorate.
