About Cundeelee
Cundeelee is a remote Aboriginal community in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, located approximately 785 kilometres east of Perth and 160 kilometres east of Kalgoorlie in the Great Victoria Desert fringes. The locality falls within the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder local government area and covers a vast 13,261 square kilometres of arid inland Western Australia. At the 2021 Census, Cundeelee recorded a population of 139 residents. The community has its origins in a ration depot established in 1939, followed by an Australian Aboriginal Evangelical Mission founded in 1950 that drew people from the surrounding desert.
Cundeelee is one of the most remote communities in Australia, set within the spinifex grasslands and mulga scrub of the inland desert landscape. Access is via unsealed roads, and the community is far from mainstream retail and commercial services. Kalgoorlie-Boulder is the nearest substantial town, providing hospitals, supermarkets, schools, and the regional airport. Community life in Cundeelee is centred on its Aboriginal cultural heritage and the resilience of its residents in maintaining connection to Country in this vast and isolated landscape.
Cundeelee falls under postcode 6434 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Kalgoorlie (Mining and Pastoral) electorate.
