About Dandaragan
Dandaragan is a small historic town in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, located approximately 170 kilometres north of Perth and 29 kilometres west of Moora, within the Shire of Dandaragan. Sitting at an elevation of 193 metres on the Dandaragan Plateau, the locality covers a vast area of nearly 975 square kilometres of farming and pastoral country. With a population of 292 at the 2021 Census, the town takes its name from an Indigenous word thought to mean "good kangaroo country."
Established from the 1850s, Dandaragan grew as a pastoral and wheat-farming settlement and formerly served as the administrative centre of the Shire of Dandaragan before council operations relocated to coastal Jurien Bay in 2003. The surrounding district remains predominantly agricultural, with wheat cropping and cattle grazing driving the local economy. The town of Moora (29km east) provides essential services including shops and a hospital, while the popular coastal resort of Jurien Bay (approximately 98km west) offers beaches, tourism amenities, and an alternative regional hub.
Dandaragan falls under postcode 6507 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Moore (Agricultural) electorate.
