About Danggali
Danggali is a vast remote locality in outback South Australia, covering approximately 3,281 square kilometres of mallee scrubland east of the Riverland, near the New South Wales border. The locality, formally established in 2013 to recognise its long-standing local name, is entirely occupied by the Danggali Conservation Park and the adjacent Danggali Wilderness Protection Area — making it one of Australia's most significant protected natural areas. It lies roughly 90 kilometres north-east of Renmark and has no permanent residents, serving instead as a protected wild landscape managed by the South Australian Department for Environment and Water.
Danggali holds the distinction of being part of Australia's first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, designated in 1977 in recognition of its outstanding mallee ecosystem. The park provides critical habitat for a rich diversity of birdlife — including Major Mitchell's cockatoos, malleefowl, and numerous honeyeaters — as well as reptiles and small mammals that thrive in the dense mallee scrub. Visitors with high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles can explore designated campgrounds and experience the profound silence and extraordinary night skies of the outback. The nearest service town is Renmark, roughly 90 km to the south-west.
Danggali falls under postcode 5417 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Stuart electorate.
