Dareton is a small town in the far west of New South Wales, situated on the Murray River approximately 1,021 kilometres west of Sydney and 20 kilometres from the regional centre of Mildura in Victoria, within the Wentworth Shire local government area. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 456 residents across a compact area of around 2.5 square kilometres on the Silver City Highway. Dareton has a significant Aboriginal history — it was once home to an Aboriginal mission — and continues to have a substantial Indigenous population, giving the town a distinctive cultural character in the remote Murray region.

Dareton sits at the heart of the Coomealla Irrigation Area, a productive agricultural district where citrus, grapes, and other horticultural crops have been grown since the early 20th century. Residents have ready access to Mildura's full range of services — including hospitals, supermarkets, schools, and entertainment — making Dareton a quiet residential alternative to the larger Victorian city just across the border. The Murray River provides opportunities for boating, fishing, and outdoor recreation, and nearby Wentworth (13 kilometres away) offers historic sights at the junction of the Murray and Darling Rivers.
