About Darke Peak
Darke Peak is a small agricultural locality in the central Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, situated approximately 110 kilometres north-west of Port Augusta and around 370 kilometres from Adelaide. Spanning a vast 461 square kilometres, the locality has a population of around 90 people, making it one of the more remote farming communities in the state. The area sits on the traditional lands of the Barngarla people and takes its name from explorer John Charles Darke, who was killed nearby in 1844; his grave on the slopes of the Darke Range remains a significant heritage site.
The Darke Peak district is dominated by grain cropping and pastoral farming across the surrounding plains and low ranges. The scenic Darke Range rises to Carappee Hill at 495 metres — the highest point on the Eyre Peninsula — and the adjacent Carappee Hill Conservation Park offers bushland walks through native scrub. A small community hall and primary school once served the township, and the area continues to draw visitors who come for the Darke Peak Scenic Drive and those seeking authentic, uncrowded outback South Australia.
Darke Peak falls under postcode 5642 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Flinders electorate.
