About Deep Lead
Deep Lead is a small rural locality in the Northern Grampians Shire of Victoria, situated approximately 8 kilometres north-west of Stawell and around 210 kilometres north-west of Melbourne. With a population of approximately 210 residents spread across a substantial area of around 73 square kilometres, it is a sparsely populated locality with a character shaped by its significant gold mining heritage. Gold was discovered here in July 1857, sparking rapid growth and making Deep Lead one of the notable goldfields of the region during the second half of the 19th century.
Today, Deep Lead is a quiet rural and semi-residential area where remnants of its mining past can still be traced in the landscape. Residents rely on Stawell for shopping, schools, medical services, and other daily needs. The nearby Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park, with its iconic sandstone ranges, walking trails, and wildflowers, is a major drawcard for the broader region. Deep Lead suits those seeking a rural lifestyle with affordable land and easy access to both the services of a regional town and the natural beauty of the Grampians.
Deep Lead falls under postcode 3381 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lowan (Western Victoria) electorate.
