About Denham
Denham is a coastal town and the administrative centre of the Shire of Shark Bay in Western Australia, situated on the western coast of the Peron Peninsula approximately 831 kilometres north of Perth. With a population of 849 in the 2021 Census, Denham holds the distinction of being the westernmost publicly accessible town in Australia, set at the edge of the UNESCO-listed Shark Bay World Heritage Area. The town was named after Captain Henry Mangles Denham of the Royal Navy, who charted Shark Bay in 1858, and retains a maritime and pastoral character shaped by its extraordinary remote coastal location.
Denham is internationally recognised as the gateway to Monkey Mia, a wildlife reserve 23 kilometres north-east of town where wild bottlenose dolphins interact with visitors along the shoreline — one of Australia's most celebrated wildlife experiences. The foreshore, fishing jetty, boat ramps, and a small retail and hospitality sector serve both residents and a significant tourist trade. Life in Denham revolves around the coast, with fishing, boating, and nature tourism central to the community; the Shark Bay World Heritage Area, Francois Peron National Park, Shell Beach, and Hamelin Pool stromatolites are all within easy reach.
Denham falls under postcode 6537 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the North West Central (Mining and Pastoral) electorate.
