About Doctors Rocks
Doctors Rocks is a small coastal locality on Tasmania's north-west coast, situated approximately 8 kilometres east of Wynyard and 25 kilometres west of Burnie, within the Waratah–Wynyard Council area. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 89 residents across an area of around 6.6 square kilometres, reflecting its character as a sparsely settled rural and coastal locality. The area is named after a distinctive basalt headland where Seabrook Creek meets Bass Strait, and the coastline is fringed by an escarpment rising to the north-west coast plateau.
Doctors Rocks is recognised as one of Wynyard's most scenic sunset spots, with the basalt headland and foreshore accessible from the Old Bass Highway. The locality is also notable for its little penguin colony, with the 'Friends of Doctors Rocks Penguins' group working alongside the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service to maintain the Conservation Area. The geology of the area — basalt outcrops with abundant olivine nodules overlying Permian tillite and Precambrian metamorphic rocks — attracts visitors with an interest in natural history. Daily necessities are met in nearby Wynyard, which offers supermarkets, schools, and medical services.
Doctors Rocks falls under postcode 7325 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Braddon (Murchison) electorate.
