About Doodlakine
Doodlakine is a small Wheatbelt farming town in Western Australia, approximately 220 kilometres east of Perth within the Shire of Kellerberrin. With a population of 81 residents spread across 247 square kilometres, it is a quintessential grain-belt locality originally established as a stopping point on the coach road to the Southern Cross goldfields before the Eastern Railway arrived in 1893. The name is derived from an Aboriginal word referring to a rock formation north of the townsite.
The town's landmark CBH grain silos, dating back to 1932, and the Old Doodlakine Townsite — a heritage site on the Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail where foundations of the original 1891 settlement remain — reflect its layered history of gold rush transport and broadacre farming. The Mundaring-to-Kalgoorlie water pipeline, one of the world's longest, passes through the area. Kellerberrin is the nearest service town at roughly 15 kilometres west, while Merredin lies about 40 kilometres to the east. The broader Wheatbelt region offers spectacular wildflower displays between August and October.
Doodlakine falls under postcode 6411 and is governed by Kellerberrin Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Central Wheatbelt (Agricultural) electorate.
