About Dromedary
Dromedary is a sparsely populated rural locality in the Central Highlands Region of Queensland, covering an area of approximately 340 square kilometres. It is situated around 219 kilometres south-east of Emerald and 229 kilometres south-west of Rockhampton, with the Expedition Range forming its western boundary and the Dawson Highway passing through the locality from east to west. The 2021 Census recorded no usual residents, confirming Dromedary's status as an uninhabited pastoral locality.
The landscape of Dromedary is defined by the rugged terrain of the Expedition Range, which forms part of the Great Dividing Range system in central Queensland, and by the open Mitchell grass and brigalow scrub plains to the east. Notable highlands within the locality include Mount Dromedary (279 metres) and Mount Hope (352 metres), whose distinctive silhouettes give the area its name. Access is primarily via the Dawson Highway, and the nearest service communities are Bauhinia to the east and the Arcadia Valley district to the south, with no public transport of any kind serving this vast, uninhabited grazing locality.
Dromedary falls under postcode 4718 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Gregory electorate.
