About Dunk
Dunk is a coastal locality in the Cassowary Coast Region of Far North Queensland, best known as the administrative locality encompassing Dunk Island — a lush tropical island known to the Warrgamay and Dyirbal peoples as Coonanglebah. Located approximately 4 kilometres off the coast near Mission Beach, the island covers around 10 square kilometres and is characterised by dense rainforest, pristine beaches, and remarkable biodiversity including cassowaries and reef species. The locality sits within the electoral district of Hill and the federal Division of Kennedy.
Dunk Island was the site of a famous resort that was devastated by Cyclone Yasi in 2011, and the island has undergone ongoing redevelopment discussions in the years since. Day visitors and campers continue to enjoy the island's walking tracks, snorkelling spots, and wildlife, accessible by water taxi from Mission Beach on the mainland. The nearby Mission Beach township provides services for residents and tourists in the broader locality, including cafes, accommodation, and access to the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics World Heritage rainforest that backs the coast.
Dunk falls under postcode 4852 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Hinchinbrook electorate.
