About Dwellingup
Dwellingup is a small timber and fruit-growing town in the Shire of Murray in Western Australia's Peel region, situated in the Darling Range approximately 97 kilometres south of Perth. Covering around 27 square kilometres at an elevation of 267 metres, the town sits amid jarrah forest and was established in the early 20th century as a centre for the timber industry. With a population of approximately 524, Dwellingup has evolved from its timber heritage into a popular eco-tourism and adventure destination.
The town is well known as the gateway to the Murray River canoe trail and is surrounded by Lane Poole Reserve, one of Western Australia's most popular parks for camping, swimming, mountain biking, and four-wheel driving. The historic Dwellingup History and Visitor Information Centre tells the story of the 1961 bushfire that destroyed much of the town, while rebuilt community infrastructure includes a general store, a pub, and a railway museum featuring heritage steam trains. Families, nature lovers, and weekend adventurers from Perth regularly make the trip to Dwellingup for its bushland scenery and outdoor activities.
Dwellingup falls under postcode 6213 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Murray-Wellington (South West) electorate.
