About Ellangowan
Ellangowan is a rural locality in the Toowoomba Region on Queensland's Darling Downs, approximately 55 kilometres south-west of Toowoomba and around 160 kilometres west of Brisbane. With a population of 95 recorded in the 2021 Census, the locality spans approximately 122 square kilometres of productive farming and grazing land. Named after the pastoral property established by settler John Thane in the 1840s, Ellangowan has a long agricultural heritage on the fertile Darling Downs.
The Condamine River forms part of the locality's boundary, contributing to the rich alluvial soils that support crop growing and cattle grazing across the area. Residents rely on Clifton for secondary schooling and basic services, while Toowoomba provides access to hospitals, major shopping and employment. The locality appeals to those seeking an affordable rural lifestyle amid the open landscapes of the Darling Downs.
Ellangowan falls under postcode 4361 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Southern Downs electorate.
