About Elliott
Elliott (also known by its Jingili name Kulumindini) is a small remote town in the Barkly Region of the Northern Territory, situated almost exactly halfway between Darwin and Alice Springs on the Stuart Highway — approximately 636 kilometres south of Darwin and 761 kilometres north of Alice Springs. With a 2021 Census population of 287 residents spread across approximately 3 square kilometres, the town is one of the few inhabited service stops on this vast stretch of outback highway. Elliott falls within the Yapurkulangu ward of the Barkly Regional Council.
The town serves primarily as a roadside service point for travellers and a supply hub for surrounding cattle stations, with a roadhouse, basic accommodation, and essential amenities available. Elliott has a significant Aboriginal community, and the surrounding country is part of traditional Jingili and Mudburra lands. The semi-arid climate is characterised by extreme summer heat and a wet season running from November to April, shaping the rhythms of daily life. The Barkly Tableland landscape — flat, red, and starkly beautiful — defines the remote outback character that makes Elliott one of the Northern Territory's most distinctive roadside communities.
Elliott falls under postcode 862 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Barkly electorate.
