About Elmhurst
Elmhurst is a small rural town in the Pyrenees region of western Victoria, located 191 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and 35 kilometres north-east of Ararat on the Pyrenees Highway. With a population of just 185 at the 2021 census, it sits within the Rural City of Ararat local government area, near the headwaters of the Wimmera River and the foothills of Mount Cole. Elmhurst retains the charm of a traditional small Victorian country town, with heritage-listed buildings including the old bank, mechanics institute, Anglican and Uniting churches, and a former hotel. The Elmhurst Recreation Reserve on Green Street serves as a community hub with a picnic area, playground, and public toilets. Residents enjoy proximity to the Pyrenees wine trail, Mount Buangor State Park for bushwalking and camping, and the larger service towns of Ararat and Avoca for everyday needs.
