About Flowerdale
Flowerdale is a small village in Victoria's Shire of Murrindindi, nestled in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range approximately 95 kilometres north of Melbourne. With a population of 790 at the 2021 Census, the town sits in the upper catchment of the Goulburn River system and is surrounded by rolling hills and native bushland. Flowerdale was one of the communities most severely impacted by the Black Saturday bushfires of February 2009, which destroyed many homes and claimed lives in the district. The community's resilience since then has become a defining part of its identity.
Despite its proximity to Melbourne, Flowerdale retains a genuinely rural character, attracting tree-changers, hobby farmers, and those seeking a quiet lifestyle away from urban pressures. The Flowerdale Hotel is the social heart of the village, and the primary school serves local families. Access to services including supermarkets and medical centres requires a drive to Yea, about 42 kilometres to the northeast, or Kilmore, around 30 kilometres to the west. The surrounding landscape of bush, creeks, and farmland makes Flowerdale popular for bushwalking and nature tourism.
Flowerdale falls under postcode 3658 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Yan Yean (Northern Victoria) electorate.
