About Forth
Forth is a small historic village in north-west Tasmania, situated on the Forth River approximately 11 kilometres west of Devonport and 110 kilometres north-west of Launceston. The locality falls primarily within the Central Coast Council area, with a small portion in the City of Devonport, and has a population of 738 across some 34 square kilometres of river valley and surrounding farmland. Formerly known as Hamilton-on-Forth, the village actually predates the neighbouring city of Devonport, with European settlement dating back to 1839.
Forth has a tranquil semi-rural character, with the Forth River providing a natural focal point and the Bass Highway nearby giving easy access to Devonport and the wider north-west coast. The Forthside Dairy Research Facility, run by the Tasmanian Institute of Agricultural Research, underscores the area's strong agricultural identity. The historic Bridge Hotel is a local landmark, and the surrounding countryside — marked by rolling green paddocks and river flats — is typical of the fertile north-west Tasmanian landscape. Residents rely on Devonport for shopping, schools, and health services.
Forth falls under postcode 7310 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Montgomery) electorate.
