About Freestone
Freestone is a rural locality and small township in Queensland's Southern Downs Region, approximately 15 kilometres north of Warwick within the Southern Downs Regional Council area. Covering around 56 square kilometres of productive Darling Downs agricultural land, the locality is characterised by cropping and dairy farms, grazing properties, and rural lifestyle blocks. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 208 residents, reflecting the area's tight-knit rural farming community.
Freestone has a long history on the Darling Downs, including the heritage-listed Freestone State School which has served the community since the early twentieth century. The historic Maryvale branch railway line once connected Freestone to Warwick, opening in 1911. Today, residents drive to Warwick — around 15 minutes to the south-west — for secondary schooling, major retail, and healthcare, while the pastoral landscape offers sweeping views across the Darling Downs. Freestone suits those drawn to a quiet farming lifestyle within easy reach of a regional centre.
Freestone falls under postcode 4370 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Southern Downs electorate.
