About Galong
Galong is a small rural village in the Hilltops Council area of New South Wales, situated approximately 260 kilometres south-west of Sydney and around 30 kilometres from the town of Harden. The locality covers a vast 260 square kilometres of agricultural land at the heart of the historic Hilltops region, which is known for sheep and cattle grazing, grain growing, and orcharding. With a population of 235 according to the 2021 Census, Galong is a quiet community with deep colonial roots dating back to the 1830s when Ned Ryan established one of the district's first major sheep runs.
Galong is perhaps best known for St Clement's Retreat, a historic monastery built around 1918 on the site of the original Ryan homestead, whose grounds and walled cemetery are open to visitors and feature notable marble sculptures by Gundagai monumental mason Frank Rusconi. The village is also close to the Boorowa and Harden Murrumburrah townships, which provide access to schools, shops, and services. Galong suits those drawn to a self-sufficient rural lifestyle, historical character, and the wide open spaces of the New South Wales Southern Tablelands.
Galong falls under postcode 2585 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Cootamundra electorate.
