About Gladysdale
Gladysdale is a small rural locality in the Shire of Yarra Ranges, Victoria, located on the Yarra Junction to Noojee Road approximately 75 kilometres east of Melbourne's CBD. Covering nearly 24 square kilometres of forested terrain, it recorded a population of 423 at the 2021 Census with a median individual income of around $43,222. The area forms part of Melbourne's broader Yarra Ranges hinterland, known for its tall mountain ash forests, creek valleys, and heritage timber industry roots.
Gladysdale has a fascinating local history — originally called Slatey Creek, it was renamed after Gladys Petitt, daughter of the local postmistress, to avoid mail confusion with another settlement. A tramway once linked Powelltown to Yarra Junction through the area, reflecting its past role in the timber industry. Today Gladysdale attracts those seeking a quiet bushland lifestyle within a reasonable drive of Yarra Junction and the services of the Upper Yarra Valley, with excellent bushwalking and birdwatching in the surrounding Yarra Ranges forests.
Gladysdale falls under postcode 3797 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Eildon (Northern Victoria) electorate.
