About Glen Davis

Glen Davis is a remote rural village in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, located approximately 80 kilometres north of Lithgow within the Capertee Valley and the City of Lithgow local government area. The locality covers a vast 358 square kilometres of sandstone escarpment, eucalypt woodland, and valley floor, and is surrounded on most sides by Wollemi National Park. With a 2021 Census population of 106, Glen Davis is one of the most isolated permanently settled localities in New South Wales, accessible via a road off the Castlereagh Highway that is partly unsealed.

Glen Davis has a fascinating industrial history as the site of Australia's first large-scale oil shale extraction operation, which ran from 1940 to 1952. The ruins of the Glen Davis Shale Oil Works are now a listed heritage site and a tourist attraction, drawing history enthusiasts and photographers. Today the village offers basic accommodation and a campground at the former townsite parkland, and serves as a base for bushwalkers exploring Wollemi National Park and the popular Pipeline Pass walk to Newnes in the Wolgan Valley. The Capertee Valley is also internationally recognised as one of Australia's premier birdwatching destinations.

Glen Davis falls under postcode 2846 and is governed by City of Lithgow Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Bathurst electorate.
