About Gootchie
Gootchie is a small rural locality in the Fraser Coast Region of Queensland, positioned roughly halfway between Gympie and Maryborough along the Bruce Highway. The locality covers approximately 35 square kilometres within the Fraser Coast Regional Council area and had a population of 96 residents at the 2021 Census. Its name derives from the Aboriginal Kabi language (Badjala dialect) word meaning sand goanna, originally the name of a local grazing property and nearby railway station.
The Bruce Highway passes through Gootchie, and the North Coast railway line also traverses the locality, though the former Gootchie Creek railway station is now closed. The area is primarily used for cattle grazing, with rolling rural properties set among native vegetation. There are no schools or shops within Gootchie; the nearest government primary schools are at Gundiah, Bauple, and Glenwood. Residents are within a 30-minute drive of both Maryborough and Gympie for services, and the coastal resort towns of Hervey Bay, Rainbow Beach, and Tin Can Bay are all accessible within an hour.
Gootchie falls under postcode 4650 and is governed by Fraser Coast Regional Council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Maryborough electorate.
