About Grass Valley
Grass Valley is a small rural townsite in the Shire of Northam, located approximately 13 kilometres east of Northam and around 100 kilometres north-east of Perth in the Avon Valley region of Western Australia's Wheatbelt. The locality takes its name from a local pastoral property of the same name, established in 1833 by William Nairn, making it one of the earlier European-settled localities in the Swan River Colony's inland expansion. With a population of approximately 158, it remains a quiet, agriculturally focused community on the edge of the fertile Avon Valley.
The surrounding landscape is defined by wheat and cereal cropping, characteristic of the broader Wheatbelt region, and the area offers the open-sky rural lifestyle typical of inland Western Australia. The historic Northam to Kalgoorlie Eastern Goldfields Railway passes through Grass Valley, a reminder of the locality's significance during the gold rush era. Northam provides the nearest services including schools, supermarkets, and medical facilities, while the York–Northam corridor is a popular weekend destination for Perth residents exploring the Avon Valley's heritage towns and farmland scenery.
Grass Valley falls under postcode 6403 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Central Wheatbelt (Agricultural) electorate.
