About Greenup
Greenup is a very small rural locality in the Southern Downs region of Queensland, located within the Goondiwindi Regional Council area approximately 15 kilometres north of Goondiwindi. With a population of just 9 residents recorded in the 2021 Census, it is one of Queensland's most sparsely populated localities, spread across a large area of approximately 181 square kilometres. The landscape is characterised by flat, arid farming country typical of the Queensland-New South Wales border region, with properties focused on broadacre cropping and beef cattle production. Greenup lies in one of Australia's most productive grain and cotton farming districts.
Despite its tiny population, Greenup is close to the regional hub of Goondiwindi, which provides all essential services including supermarkets, medical facilities, schools, and a strong agricultural services sector. The area is popular with farming families and graziers who require large landholdings and value the proximity to Goondiwindi's infrastructure. Life in Greenup is defined by wide open skies, the rhythms of the farming calendar, and the strong community bonds that characterise small rural Queensland towns. The Macintyre River and surrounding floodplains also support important wetland habitats and attract birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.
Greenup falls under postcode 4387 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Southern Downs electorate.
