About Greta
Greta is a historic small town in the Hunter Valley, located 183 kilometres north of Sydney and 20 kilometres west of Maitland in the Cessnock local government area. With a population of 3,349, this former coal mining town traces its origins to the 1830s. The town gained significance when Edgeworth David discovered the famous Greta Coal Seam in 1886, and by 1907, ten collieries were operating in the area.
Today Greta offers a quiet rural lifestyle with Hunter Valley wineries nearby. The town retains heritage character through its historic courthouse and war memorial. The Greta Army Camp, now closed, processed over 100,000 post-war migrants between 1949 and 1960, leaving a significant legacy in Australian immigration history. Greta attracts families and retirees seeking affordable country living with rail access to Newcastle and the Hunter region.
Greta falls under postcode 2334 and is governed by Cessnock Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Cessnock electorate.
