About Greys Plain
Greys Plain is a small locality on the southern fringe of Carnarvon in Western Australia's Gascoyne region, situated approximately 900 kilometres north of Perth near the mouth of the Gascoyne River. Covering around 7 square kilometres, the locality had a population of 156 at the 2021 Census, with community housing accounting for nearly 80 per cent of its 44 dwellings — the highest proportion of any residential locality in the area. Greys Plain falls within the Shire of Carnarvon local government area, in a remote coastal region characterised by its tropical climate, horticulture, and proximity to world-class natural attractions.
Greys Plain borders the town of Carnarvon, giving residents ready access to a supermarket, schools, medical centre, and the services expected of a regional Gascoyne hub. The broader Carnarvon region is renowned for its banana and tomato plantations irrigated by the Gascoyne River, as well as its proximity to the Shark Bay World Heritage Area to the south and the Ningaloo Reef to the north. The locality's predominantly community housing character reflects its role in supporting Carnarvon's workforce, and residents enjoy the spectacular coastal and outback landscapes of the Gascoyne region as part of everyday life.
Greys Plain falls under postcode 6701 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the North West Central (Mining and Pastoral) electorate.
