About Gunning
Gunning is a small historic town in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, situated on the Old Hume Highway between Goulburn and Yass, about 240 kilometres south-west of Sydney and 74 kilometres north of Canberra. Established in 1821, the town had a population of approximately 659 at the 2016 census and sits at an elevation of 566 metres above sea level in the Upper Lachlan Shire. The district has strong pastoral roots, with wool and beef farming underpinning the local economy for nearly two centuries. The surrounding countryside offers sweeping tablelands scenery and a cool, temperate climate.
Gunning appeals to those seeking a quiet rural lifestyle within a few hours of major cities, making it increasingly popular as a tree-change destination. The town features a charming main street with heritage buildings, a pub, local shops, and a primary school. The Gunning Sheep Dog Trials and the annual Gunning Small Farm Field Days draw visitors from across the region. Residents rely on Goulburn (46 km) and Yass (39 km) for major shopping and medical services, while Canberra is a straightforward drive south via the Federal Highway.
Gunning falls under postcode 2581 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Monaro electorate.
