About Hamilton Plains
Hamilton Plains is a small rural locality in the Whitsunday Region of Queensland, situated north of Proserpine and approximately 130 kilometres south of Bowen, within the broader Whitsunday hinterland. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 80 residents, consistent with its character as a low-density agricultural district rather than a residential suburb. The locality covers 8.4 square kilometres of flat, low-lying terrain at around 10 metres above sea level, with the Proserpine River forming much of its western and southern boundary.
Hamilton Plains is almost entirely given over to sugarcane farming, with a network of cane tramways delivering harvested cane to the Proserpine Sugar Mill in the neighbouring town of Proserpine. The Bruce Highway and the North Coast railway line both traverse the locality from south to north-west, though neither provides a local stop for residents. The Proserpine–Shute Harbour Road (State Route 59) begins at an intersection with the Bruce Highway within the locality, providing the main road link towards Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands. Essential services, schools, and shopping are available in Proserpine, approximately 5 kilometres to the south.
Hamilton Plains falls under postcode 4800 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Whitsunday electorate.
