About Hamilton
Hamilton is a small rural locality situated in the Central Highlands Council area of Tasmania, approximately 73 kilometres north-west of Hobart and 37 kilometres north-west of New Norfolk. Covering around 129 square kilometres of highland pastoral land, Hamilton is one of Tasmania's earliest inland settlements, set alongside the Clyde River in the Derwent Valley region. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 241 residents, with a median household income typical of rural Tasmanian communities at around 3,500 per year.
Hamilton is known for its well-preserved colonial-era streetscapes and historic buildings, reflecting its origins as a significant early pastoral and administrative centre in Van Diemen's Land. The locality's heritage character, including sandstone buildings and old homesteads, makes it a quiet drawcard for history enthusiasts and those seeking a remote rural lifestyle. Residents largely rely on private vehicles for daily needs, with New Norfolk and Hobart providing the nearest significant services and shopping. The surrounding Central Highlands offer trout fishing in the Clyde River, picturesque highland scenery, and access to some of Tasmania's best outdoor recreation areas.
Hamilton falls under postcode 7140 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Prosser) electorate.
