About Harford
Harford is a small rural locality situated approximately 25 kilometres east of Devonport in north-west Tasmania, within the Latrobe Council area. Covering nearly 80 square kilometres of agricultural and pastoral land, the locality sits between the Bass Highway corridor and Port Sorell, with the Rubicon River forming part of its western boundary. With a 2021 Census population of 97 residents across 34 dwellings, Harford is a sparsely settled farming community that has retained its quiet rural character since early colonial settlement.
Originally known as Heidelberg, Harford was historically a busy agricultural hub at the crossroads of roads leading to Sassafras, Thirlstane, and Latrobe. Today, the locality remains defined by grazing properties, crop production, and the wide open pastoral landscapes typical of the Latrobe hinterland. Nearby Latrobe offers essential services, schools, and shops, while the coastal townships of Port Sorell and Shearwater are accessible within 20 minutes. Residents lead a quiet rural lifestyle, with Devonport providing the full range of city conveniences within a short drive.
Harford falls under postcode 7307 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (McIntyre) electorate.
