About Hatherleigh
Hatherleigh is a small rural locality in the Wattle Range Council area, situated in South Australia's Limestone Coast region approximately 322 kilometres south-east of Adelaide and 15 kilometres north-west of Millicent. The locality covers around 89 square kilometres of predominantly agricultural land and had a population of 154 at the 2021 census. Its establishment as a town dates to 1879, reflecting the area's long history of European settlement in the south-east of South Australia.
The surrounding Limestone Coast is one of South Australia's most productive agricultural and forestry regions, and Hatherleigh sits within this broader rural landscape. Millicent, just 15 kilometres to the south-east, provides the nearest access to supermarkets, schools, health services, and community facilities. The region is also renowned for its wine production — the Coonawarra and Wrattonbully wine regions lie nearby — making the Limestone Coast a popular destination for food and wine tourism that passes through the broader district.
Hatherleigh falls under postcode 5280 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mount Gambier electorate.
