About Havelock
Havelock is a small rural locality in Victoria's Central Goldfields region, located approximately 10 kilometres north of Maryborough and around 150 kilometres north-west of Melbourne. It falls within the Shire of Central Goldfields and covers nearly 28 square kilometres of agricultural land. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 83 residents, reflecting the hamlet's quiet, dispersed character typical of the post-gold-rush Victorian interior.
Havelock has a rich gold-mining history: gold was discovered here in 1858 and the settlement was named in honour of Major General Sir Henry Havelock. The area later developed as a farming community after mining activity declined, and a school once served the locality until its closure in 1927. Today, Maryborough — a regional centre with shops, schools, healthcare, and V/Line rail connections — is the nearest town for all services. The surrounding landscape of open farmland and scattered bushland makes Havelock popular with those seeking a quiet rural retreat with affordable land, while the broader Goldfields region offers historic townships and scenic drives.
Havelock falls under postcode 3465 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ripon (Western Victoria) electorate.
