About Hayes
Hayes is a small rural locality in the Derwent Valley region of Tasmania, situated approximately 40 kilometres north-west of Hobart and around 6 kilometres north-west of the historic town of New Norfolk within the Derwent Valley Council area. With a population of 109 at the 2021 Census spread across nearly 22 square kilometres, Hayes is a sparsely settled farming community along the banks of the Derwent River. The locality is predominantly agricultural in character, with beef, sheep and mixed farming defining the landscape.
Hayes is perhaps best known as the former site of Hayes Prison Farm, Australia's first open prison farm, which operated on 800 hectares from 1937 until its closure in 2012 and featured a dairy herd, piggery, market gardens and vegetable processing plant. The surrounding Derwent Valley countryside is noted for its hop growing, beef farming and rural scenery. Residents rely on nearby New Norfolk for schools, shops, medical services and community facilities, while Hobart is accessible via the Lyell Highway for a full range of urban amenities.
Hayes falls under postcode 7140 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Prosser) electorate.
