About Hellyer
Hellyer is a small coastal rural locality within the Circular Head Council area in north-west Tasmania, situated approximately 35 kilometres east of the town of Smithton with Bass Strait forming its northern boundary. Gazetted as a locality in 1962 and named for Henry Hellyer, a surveyor who explored north-western Tasmania in the 1820s, Hellyer covers just over 7 square kilometres and recorded a 2021 Census population of 189 residents. The locality is characterised by dairy and beef grazing farmland with coastal vegetation fringing the Bass Strait shoreline.
The Detention River forms part of Hellyer's eastern boundary, contributing to a quiet and largely unspoilt natural setting typical of north-west Tasmania's rugged coastal character. Smithton, the main service centre for the Circular Head region, is a 30-minute drive to the west and offers supermarkets, schools, healthcare, and essential services. Residents enjoy the tranquillity of remote north-western Tasmanian living, with Rocky Cape National Park accessible nearby and the broader region celebrated for its cheese production, beef cattle, and spectacular coastal scenery.
Hellyer falls under postcode 7321 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Montgomery) electorate.
