About Hexham
Hexham is a small historic township in western Victoria situated on the Hamilton Highway between Caramut and Mortlake in the Shire of Moyne, approximately 250 kilometres west of Melbourne and 47 kilometres north-east of Warrnambool. The town sits on the banks of the Hopkins River and is reputed to be Victoria second oldest inland settlement, after Harrow. The 2016 census recorded a population of around 143, with a strong rural and agricultural character.
Hexham carries significant colonial heritage as a former Cobb and Co staging point for mail and passenger routes between Geelong and Port Fairy, and a stopover for miners heading to the goldfields. Today the township offers a peaceful rural lifestyle surrounded by volcanic plains farming country, with the Hopkins River providing a scenic backdrop for walking and fishing. Mortlake (16 km) and Warrnambool provide the nearest significant retail and services, while the Great Ocean Road and Grampians National Park are within comfortable driving distance.
