About Higgins
Higgins is a quiet, established suburb nestled in Canberra's Belconnen district, approximately 12 kilometres northwest of the city centre. Named after politician and judge Henry Bournes Higgins, the suburb was gazetted in 1968 and features streets named after Australian judges. With a population of around 3,300 residents and a notably high median income, Higgins offers a stable, family-oriented community with leafy streets and mature gardens at an elevation of nearly 600 metres.
Life in Higgins centres on its peaceful residential character, with a mix of original 1970s homes and renovated properties on generous blocks. While local amenities are limited—the original shops have closed—residents enjoy easy access to Kippax Fair and the comprehensive facilities of Belconnen Town Centre including Westfield Belconnen. The suburb attracts established homeowners who value space, quietude, and the natural beauty of the surrounding nature reserves while remaining within easy reach of Canberra's employment centres.
Higgins falls under postcode 2615 and is governed by Unincorporated Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ginninderra electorate.
