About Hill End

Hill End is a historic former gold mining town in the Bathurst Regional Council area of New South Wales, located 278 km northwest of Sydney and 75 km northwest of Bathurst. The town rose to prominence during the New South Wales gold rush of the early 1870s, when it became one of the most populous towns in the colony following the discovery of rich gold reefs at Hawkins Hill — including the famous Beyers-Holtermann Specimen, the world's largest recorded single mass of gold. Today Hill End retains much of its 19th-century streetscape and is heritage-listed, with a small permanent population of around 111 at the 2021 census.

Hill End is now primarily known as a heritage tourism destination and artists' retreat, drawing visitors with its preserved colonial-era buildings, the Hill End Historic Site managed by NSW National Parks, and the rugged beauty of its surrounding Wattle Flat and Turon River country. The town has attracted painters and photographers since the 1940s, most notably Donald Friend and Russell Drysdale. Facilities are minimal — a pub, a basic general store and a campground — making it best suited to those seeking a deeply authentic slice of Australian gold rush history, bush camping or creative retreat.

Hill End falls under postcode 2850 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Upper Hunter electorate.
