About Hill River
Hill River is a rural locality in South Australia's Clare Valley wine region, situated within the District Council of Clare and Gilbert Valleys approximately 100 kilometres north of Adelaide. The locality covers around 109 square kilometres of gently undulating agricultural land, and the 2021 census recorded 98 residents. Hill River takes its name from the seasonal watercourse that drains the district, and the area was first pastorally settled in the 1840s, making it one of the earliest farmed areas in the Mid North.
The Hill River district is renowned for its premium wine production, with the historic Hill River Wines (Jaeschke's Hill River Clare Estate) operating a well-regarded cellar door. The wider Clare Valley attracts wine tourists and cyclists, with the Riesling Trail passing through nearby Auburn and Clare township. Residents have access to shops, schools and medical services in Clare (approx. 15 km), while Auburn and Balaklava provide additional rural service options. The region is popular for weekend getaways from Adelaide.
