Originally known as Eleanora Township, it was established in 1884 and grew rapidly during the late 1800s as a goldmining hub, reaching a peak population of over 3,000 during its boom years. Today the village is home to around 174 residents and is recognised for its significant heritage, including remnants of the old mining township scattered through the surrounding bushland.
The Hillgrove Rural Life and Industry Museum preserves the history of the goldmining era and is a key attraction drawing visitors from Armidale and beyond.
