About Howatharra
Howatharra is a small agricultural town in Western Australia's Mid West region, located approximately 30 kilometres north of Geraldton and 454 kilometres north of Perth, within the Shire of Chapman Valley. With a population of 112 at the 2021 census and covering 90 square kilometres, the township was originally established as a railway siding on the Northampton railway line in 1908. Its Aboriginal name refers to a nearby spring, and the area has been an agricultural settlement since the early 1900s when surrounding land was opened for farming.
Howatharra is situated just off the North West Coastal Highway on the Oakagee River, serving as a quiet hub for surrounding cereal farming and pastoral properties. The townsite has minimal services — residents rely on Geraldton (30km south) for shopping, healthcare, schools, and entertainment. The Mid West region's warm Mediterranean-style climate supports wheat, barley, and mixed farming across the Chapman Valley. Howatharra appeals to those deeply embedded in agricultural life and those seeking affordable rural property with reasonable access to a regional city.
Howatharra falls under postcode 6532 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the North West Central (Mining and Pastoral) electorate.
