About Huon

Huon is a small rural locality in north-east Victoria, situated on the southern shores of Lake Hume approximately 347 kilometres north-east of Melbourne and 25 kilometres south-east of Wodonga. Straddling the boundary of Indigo Shire and Towong Shire, the area is set within the scenic upper Murray Valley, surrounded by rolling farmland and the vast waters of the Hume Reservoir. With a population of around 206 residents as of the 2021 census, Huon is one of the quieter communities in the high country fringe, characterised by a sparse, rural settlement pattern. The Murray Valley Highway passes through the locality, connecting it to regional centres in both Victoria and New South Wales.

Huon's lakeside position on Lake Hume makes it a popular destination for boating, fishing, water skiing, and camping, drawing visitors from Albury-Wodonga and further afield during warmer months. The locality has a small cluster of amenities including the historic Huon Post Office, which remains a local landmark, and residents rely on nearby Tallangatta (17 km east) and Wodonga (25 km north-west) for supermarkets, schools, and medical services. The community has a strong connection to the land, with farming and rural lifestyles central to daily life. The surrounding high country offers exceptional scenery and easy access to the Alpine National Park and the Victorian high plains.

Huon falls under postcode 3695 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Benambra (Northern Victoria) electorate.
