About Hurricane
Hurricane is a vast, extremely remote locality in the Shire of Mareeba in Far North Queensland, located approximately 200 kilometres west of Cairns in the Gulf Savannah country. With a population of just 4 at the 2021 census across an enormous 1,062 square kilometres, it is one of the most sparsely populated localities in Queensland. The landscape is characterised by tropical savannah woodland, seasonal creeks, and vast cattle stations under a hot, monsoonal climate.
Hurricane is quintessential Gulf country — vast pastoral stations running cattle on native grasses across the dry tropical savannah. There are no services, roads are often unsealed and impassable in the wet season, and the nearest town is Chillagoe or Almaden. The locality is of interest to pastoralists, outback travellers, and those drawn to Australia's most remote and untouched tropical landscapes.
Hurricane falls under postcode 4871 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Traeger electorate.
