About Irrewillipe East
Irrewillipe East is a small rural locality in the Colac Otway Shire of south-western Victoria, situated approximately 20 kilometres south-west of Colac and around 171 kilometres south-west of Melbourne. With a 2021 census population of 84 residents across 43 square kilometres, the locality occupies gently rolling countryside between Colac and Timboon, characterised by dairy and mixed farming on the southern rim of Victoria's basalt plains approaching the Otway Ranges. The name Irrewillipe is thought to derive from an Aboriginal word meaning 'sunset', with the district first taken up as a pastoral run in 1838.
The landscape around Irrewillipe East is defined by productive farming land and remnant native vegetation, typical of the Colac Otway region's transition between open plains and the forested hinterland. The neighbouring locality of Irrewillipe, to the west, once supported a small school opened in 1881, reflecting a modest history of closer settlement in the district. Residents rely on Colac for most services, including supermarkets, health care, schools, and transport connections, while the broader Colac Otway area offers access to the Great Ocean Road and the Otway Ranges for outdoor recreation.
Irrewillipe East falls under postcode 3249 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Polwarth (Western Victoria) electorate.
