With a population of around 4,880, the town sits at an elevation of 280 metres and serves as the administrative centre of Junee Shire. Junee has a rich railway heritage, having been a major junction on the NSW rail network since the late 1870s.

The town's economy is underpinned by agriculture, rail transport, light industry, and government services including the Junee Correctional Centre. Junee is known for its well-preserved heritage buildings along Lorne Street, the historic Junee Roundhouse railway museum, and the Monte Cristo Homestead — reputedly Australia's most haunted house.
