About Koonamore
Koonamore is a remote outback locality in the mid-north of South Australia, covering over 3,141 square kilometres of arid pastoral land approximately 500 kilometres north of Adelaide. The area is named after Koonamore Station, a historic sheep and cattle property that gained scientific prominence as the site of long-running ecological research by the University of Adelaide. With a population of just four people recorded in the 2016 Census, Koonamore is one of the most sparsely populated localities in South Australia, characterised by vast open scrubland, red sandy soils, and a harsh semi-arid climate.
The landscape surrounding Koonamore is typical of the South Australian outback — saltbush and bluebush plains stretching to the horizon, punctuated by rocky rises and occasional creek lines. The locality attracts outback travellers and naturalists interested in the region's ecology and heritage, including Koonamore Station's historic homestead and associated research plots. The nearest regional centre is Olary or Broken Hill, and basic supplies are available at Yunta, roughly 50 kilometres to the south. Self-sufficiency and a love of remote living are essential for those who call this area home.
Koonamore falls under postcode 5440 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Stuart electorate.
