About Koonya
Koonya is a small rural locality on the Tasman Peninsula in south-east Tasmania, situated approximately 18 kilometres north-east of Nubeena within the Tasman Council local government area. With a 2021 Census population of 138 residents spread across around 26.6 square kilometres, Koonya is one of the smallest communities on the peninsula, set amid rolling farmland and coastal bushland. The locality has a rich history — originally established in 1841 as a secondary penal settlement known as Cascades, the name Koonya, believed to be of Aboriginal origin, was officially gazetted in 1968.
Koonya is best known for its spectacular natural setting near Norfolk Bay and its proximity to the Port Arthur Historic Site, one of Australia's most significant convict heritage landmarks and a World Heritage-listed area. The locality hosts the annual Koonya Garlic Festival, a beloved community celebration that draws visitors from across the peninsula. With no commercial services of its own, residents rely on nearby Taranna and Nubeena for essentials, but the area offers a deeply peaceful lifestyle surrounded by Tasmanian coastal scenery, making it particularly popular with those seeking a quiet, nature-connected way of life.
Koonya falls under postcode 7187 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Prosser) electorate.
